ScreenGen was established to support research into AI-assisted screenwriting and novel-to-screenplay conversion.
We are at the beginning of this effort. Our hope is to make a meaningful contribution through careful study, experimentation and review.
Our research focus
Understanding the story.
Exploring the adaptation.
Our plans explore how AI can learn from novels and their screenplay adaptations, and how the study of scenes in screenplays and finished films can inform writing and revision.
We are interested in the choices that shape an adaptation: what to retain, what to condense, how to express a character’s inner life through action, and how to build a coherent dramatic progression.
How we approach the work
Evidence, experimentation
and human judgment.
Our planned approach links analysis to source material, distinguishes observation from interpretation, and uses editorial feedback to guide improvement. We aim to assess AI workflows through the quality of the screenplays they produce.
These are research directions we intend to develop and evaluate. We are hopeful about the possibilities and recognize that progress will require testing, revision and continued learning.
